The Japanese Education System

The Japanese system of education is very different from the American educational system. In Japan, all teaching and learning is geared towards passing the necessary exams required to enter a good university. Upon graduation from a good university a student can be guaranteed a life time job with an excellent company.  Learning, in part, is nothing more than a systematic memorization of facts.  English is also taught in this fashion.  Grammar and translation are stressed, as this will be tested on the written exams.  Japanese students know English grammar better than most Americans, but when it comes to actually speaking, they canft be understood because their pronunciation and intonation skills are so poor.   It is here where Mattyfs method of teaching differs from the Japanese educational system.

Mattyfs pioneered the idea of teaching conversational English to very young children with an emphasis on pronunciation, intonation, and memorization of basic sentence patterns.  It is not preparation for the university entrance exams, as these skills canft be tested.  Instead, Mattyfs role in the Japanese educational system is to supplement a studentfs knowledge of the English language by teaching them the correct English pronunciation and intonation, both of which are not taught properly at their regular Japanese schools

Mattyfs school also differs from the Japanese system in that native speakers of English provide instruction to the students.    Mattyfs method is designed as a gradual program of English for small classes of children from kindergarten through senior high.  The students meet only once a week at private homes, or rooms in communi ty centers after their regular Japanese school day ends.  Progress is minimal.  However, it is Mattyfs goal for the young children to slowly acquire the correct English pronunciation and intonation as their own speech habits develop.    As the children advance in their English studies, the grammar they learn at their Japanese schools and Mattyfs program of intonation and pronunciation mix together to develop for them a better knowledge both grammatically and orally of the English language.  Mattyfs is interested in people who genuinely love children, particularly younger children, and who speak with a standard English accent.
